How green is green energy?

Photovoltaic power plants are becoming increasingly desirable, given the need for a “green future” that has been talked about for a long time. As in all of Europe, Bulgaria is also experiencing an increase in written-off bank loans related to the construction of photovoltaic systems.

Photovoltaic systems for personal use and business are experiencing significant growth. They are proven to be environmentally friendly, while also returning the investment many times over, drastically reducing electricity bills. Over the last twenty years, large solar parks have become an increasingly common sight around the world.

What happens after the end of the life cycle of solar panels?

In reality, both lithium-ion batteries and solar panel materials are fairly harmless and can be recycled when the time comes.

The question that worries us all is what happens after the end of the life cycle of solar panels?

The equipment in solar parks has a long lifespan, around 30 years, which means that we need to think about their application. The energy sector predicts that around 10 million tons of solar panel waste will be produced globally annually by 2050. Most of the materials used in the construction of these modules are not toxic, however. Some are even noble metals, such as silver and tellurium. A typical copper panel is 76 wt% ca glass, 10% polymer, 8% aluminum, 5% silicon and 1% copper.

Traces of silver, tin, and lead are also used in the components. Meanwhile, in thin-film modules, the panel is made of thin films of semiconductors deposited on glass, plastic, or metal, providing flexibility for functional applications.

Even if these panels end up in landfills, they are unlikely to have a direct negative impact on human health.

What solutions does Europe offer for photovoltaics after their end of life?

European legislation on electronic waste made a change in 2012, specifically concerning photovoltaic modules. This obliges companies to collect and recycle their products, as well as to guarantee the financial future of photovoltaic waste management in order to protect the environment.
