There are RES projects, but Bulgarians do not take sufficient advantage of them

Dr. Eng. Borislav Manchev, Head of Battery Systems at the Central Energy Repair Base (CERB) and Chairman of the Association of Energy Engineers, in “Clean Energy” 15.05.2024

The various programs and contracts under the National Renewable Energy Plan provide an opportunity to install capacities and accompanying storage systems. These projects allow Bulgarian entrepreneurs to benefit from the RES sector, but the number of projects launched so far is very small. If the full potential is realized, then to a large extent the problems of local energy imbalances will be solved, which according to various data reach up to 2000 megawatts, this was commented by Dr. Eng. Borislav Manchev, Head of Battery Systems at the Central Energy Repair Base (CERB) and Chairman of the Association of Energy Engineers, in the program “Clean Energy” with host Veronika Denizova.

The new tariffs that the US imposed on China were not a surprise given the ambitions of the North American country to limit the expansion of its economic competitor, Mnachev said. The tariffs target batteries and electric vehicles, as well as other high-tech products, the guest believes that this will limit imports and stimulate domestic production in the US. On the other hand, China will not limit its production, which will lower prices in other markets, including Europe.

The guest said that Europe should not rush to take similar measures to the US, given the limited production capacity and the desire for a green transition. The old continent is moving towards electromobility, the development of renewable energy and the accompanying battery storage systems. Currently, various technologies are being developed among storage systems, seeking the most efficient way to use energy at night.

In recent years, the development of lithium batteries has intensified significantly, with the technology being optimized, paying special attention to its safety during operation. The guest spoke about the various programs and contracts under the National Renewable Energy Sources Program, which provide the opportunity to install capacities and accompanying storage systems. These projects allow Bulgarian entrepreneurs to benefit from the RES sector, but the number of projects launched so far is very small, despite the remaining year and a half for application. The guest explained what the benefits will be when the full potential of the set parameters is fulfilled.

“(Experts in the field) are citing figures of imbalances reaching 2,000 megawatts. Given that the total daily load in Bulgaria is within 4,800 megawatts, this is visible in the diagrams that ESO broadcasts in real time. I expect that problems of local imbalances will be largely resolved here and we will move in this direction. In addition, KEWR has approved a new methodology for balancing energy, which is effective from May 1 and in it, imbalances are expected to be regulated on a market basis, both in the direction of oversupply and in the direction of shortage.”

For Bulgarian energy engineers, an opportunity opens up with the introduction of battery systems, as there is a need for monitoring within 5 years after the implementation of the relevant projects. The guest said that finding staff in the sector is difficult, but there are well-educated and ambitious young engineers who help the industry develop. He spoke about completed projects in the field of RES and called on potential investors to trust the specialists in this regard, and to take advantage of the projects from the PVU.
